Why we raise awareness of hearing loss

Words by Smiley Team

Hearing loss and poor hearing health are issues that impact people all over America – but there are organizations out there giving them the support they need.

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) opens the world of communication to people with hearing loss through information, education, support and advocacy. The association's mission is to provide people with the tools they need to live more successfully with hearing loss and to show them they're not alone in their struggle.

Their major goal is to raise awareness of hearing loss among individuals, families, friends, coworkers, teachers, hearing health care providers, industry, government, and others.

Support can take numerous forms, as it means different things to different people. HLAA provides a diverse range of local and national activities, events, and resources to meet the needs of its members. More information on their support resources, including their national network of chapters and state organizations, Hearing Life magazine and Hearing Life e-News, the annual HLAA Convention, the Walk4Hearing, and monthly webinars, may be found on their programs and events website.

For nearly four decades, the HLAA has been making a difference in the lives of persons with hearing loss.

The association's Walk4Hearing is the only national event that raises awareness about hearing loss and emphasizes the significance of maintaining good hearing health.

Participating in Walk4Hearing brings together thousands of people from all across the country who understand what it's like to live with hearing loss. It's about sharing stories, learning from one another, and taking the first step toward better hearing health.

The Walk4Hearing is a powerful event that allows participants to learn about services and technologies, connect with others in the community, and raise awareness about the importance of hearing health. Nearly 5,000 people joined the initiative in 2021, raising $1.1 million in support of people who have hearing loss.

Since 2006, the Walk4Hearing event has raised $16 million to fund programs from more than 1,750 alliance organizations. They have welcomed 107,000 people at 285 Walks with participation from over 750 HLAA Chapter and State Organizations.
