First Bornean orangutan born in 20 years at Blackpool Zoo

A critically-endangered orangutan has given birth at Blackpool zoo for the first time in 20 years.

Aww! Tell me more.

The 13-year-old female, Jingga, produced a son with her partner, Kawan, as part of a breeding scheme aimed at preserving this species on the brink of extinction.

The zoo’s director, Darren Webster, welcomed the birth as “wonderful news” for the zoo and for the survival of this species.

Bornean orangutans living in the wild have come under increasing pressure from human-related threats. The population is predicted to decline by 86% from 1950 to 2025, due to habitat loss.

Blackpool Zoo is involved in the European Endangered Species Programme. It is aimed at preserving the genetic health of some of the world’s most vulnerable species in captivity while supporting conservation work around the world.

Soon, all Detroit municipal buildings will run on solar power

The city of Detroit used to be a hub for all things industrial, especially car production – once the lifeblood of the American midwest. But when those factories shut down and moved overseas many cities like Detroit, struggled to find their footing. Now, over half a decade later, Detroit is making a rebound in many ways, one of which is clean energy.

Soon, all Detroit’s municipal buildings are going to be powered by solar energy in an attempt to combat the climate crisis.

The city has determined that it’s going to need around 250 acres of solar panels in order to achieve 100% solar power for its municipal buildings. To make this happen, the city is allowing neighborhoods to apply to host solar farms in their areas where they will also reap the benefits of clean energy.

Solar field sites must be between 10 and 50 acres, and for every solar acre assembled, $25,000 in community benefits will be available for neighborhood projects such as park and recreation improvements, home repairs, and solar power for neighboring homes.

“If we decide a neighborhood’s proposal is a good fit, we will have conversations with the residents to determine what they want and need to help create more energy-efficient and climate resilient homes, or to improve their shared spaces,” Ray Solomon, director of Detroit’s Department of Neighborhoods, said.

An accidental donation turns into much more

Sometimes we can make a difference without ever meaning to and our actions can have impacts far beyond what we intended, as one Californian man recently found out.

The man, who goes by Michael, wrote on Reddit about how he mistakenly donated over $15,000 to a GoFundMe, to “Urgent Food Relief Needed: Bangladesh.”

His neighbor approached him about potentially donating and while Michael thought he was donating $150, he accidentally sent $15,041. The charity quickly took notice of the massive donation and sent him thank you images to express their appreciation.

“Literally hundreds of photos of frail, elderly, disabled, and malnourished individuals holding signs with my name,” Michael said.

“[A] man had sent me a video of himself from Bangladesh, surrounded by dozens of impoverished and hungry people holding bags of food, thanking me BY NAME (Michael) for my generous donation,” he wrote.

By that point, he had already started a refund request with GoFundMe and by the time it was processed he decided to donate $1,500 instead of the original $150, but the story ended up blowing up on Reddit and going viral.

As a result, the GoFundMe surpassed its goal of $26,108, and at the time of writing it sits at over $53,000.

“The online community more than covered for me and now I feel so proud of this whole story,” he said.

This woman dedicated her career to helping children

Nasra Ayub was 15 when she first heard about Female Genital Mutilation.

Her older sister was volunteering for Integrate UK, an organisation seeking equality and strong communities. After learning about their work, Nasra ended up joining too – and so began a life dedicated to helping young people.

“I didn’t realise that FGM was something that happened in my community,” explains Nasra.  “I’m from a Somali background. And further to this, I didn’t know that it happened to members of my family. So I was quite horrified.”

An anxious teenager, it took Nasra some time but eventually, she decided that she wanted to take on the task of helping others.

“[I started] delivering talks around radicalization, extremism and safeguarding young people,” says Nasra. “When I was about 18 there was this massive wave of young kids going to Syria and being groomed online …and one of the kids that this happened to was somebody from Bristol.”

“The narrative that was being given by society and has stayed with me today, is that we view these kids that are being groomed online as perpetrators and as criminals rather than as victims who are being groomed. Because how does it happen that a young child who is deemed to be normal suddenly decides to go and leave everything behind?”

Integrate UK, where Nasra and her sister volunteered, is funded by the Global Fund for Children charity. This is how she first met Hayley, GFC’s Global Managing Director – and together they went on to set up the Youth Leadership Council, a group aiming to promote the needs of children and advance their rights.

Today, Nasra is the Programmes Associate with GFC where she works on the Spark Fund.

“The Spark Fund was basically a [reaction] to the pandemic. A lot of young people signing up their organisations were on the frontline of a lot of activism, campaigning and holding their communities together, but the money wasn’t there,” explains Nasra. “So the Spark Fund was created to address this, trying to [help] young people decide where funding goes, and help fund organisations across the world.”

As much as her work is global, Nasra is also keen to support young people closer to home. In Bradford, Nasra is working to fund grassroots organisations that work with young boys, encouraging them to engage with their communities, and offering them good role models.

“I think it’s very timely because young boys need support more than ever right now, with … people questioning what masculinity is and all that,” explains Nasra. “Now is the time more than ever to ask young boys ‘who are your role models, and who is a good role model? What’s a bad role model? What do you look at when it comes to masculinity and how can we support you?’”

Ultimately, Nasra is concerned with supporting young people as they try to give back, and encouraging them to do as much good as they can. It isn’t about channelling money into as many charities as possible. For Nasra, and her colleagues at Global Fund for Children, it is all about making sure young people are able to take control of their desire to give back.

“That’s one of my areas of passion,” Nasra tells Smiley News. “Especially on a global scale. Supporting young people to [help them] be involved in philanthropy, as well as having the power and resources to make those decisions as to where money goes in their communities.”

“There’s millions of pounds going into this space, but it’s being decided by those that are not from the communities that they aim to serve. Give the money to the young people because they can do it. The Spark Fund is a testimony to that, that they actually can make informed decisions.”

New tuberculosis vaccine could save 8.5 million lives

For the first time in 100 years, the world may have a new vaccine for tuberculosis, an infectious bacterial disease that affects millions of people each year worldwide.

This sounds hopeful.

Yes, it’s hopeful. What’s more, philanthropic institutions will provide up to $550m for the vaccine’s development.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide about $400 million for its final trials, while the charitable science foundation, Wellcome, will add up to $150 million to that funding.

Over the course of 25 years, a vaccine with at least 50% efficacy could prevent up to 76 million new tuberculosis cases and save 8.5 million lives.

“With TB cases and deaths on the rise, the need for new tools has never been more urgent,” said Bill Gates.

The World Health Organisation also welcomed the foundations’ support and promised to help develop the vaccine.

The mission to save the world’s tiniest turtle

Pictures of the Vallarta mud turtle are making the rounds of the web. Its species is special because it’s the smallest turtle in the world, measuring, on average, just 3.75 inches in length.

Native to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the cute little turtle also happens to be one of the most endangered in the world as rapid urbanization has threatened its natural habitat.

The species when first described five years ago, was already in dire straits but the threat has only grown since. To address the issue, in comes a conservation, breeding, and research center, called Turtle Island.

“Our mission is simple: save turtles and tortoises from extinction through acute rescue, care, research, breeding, and rewilding,” they write on their website.

Helmed by Austrian scientist Peter Praschag, the nonprofit houses over 2,500 turtles belonging to more than 240 taxa in multiple locations across Austria, and has worked on conservation projects in Turkey, China, South Sudan, Bangladesh, and other countries throughout the world.

Now, along with the University of Guadalajara, Turtle Island established an assurance colony in the area to house, research, and breed the Vallarta turtles before eventually rewilding them. Then a year later, in 2023 they came back to the area to erect a turtle protection fence.

That hard work has paid off, with the fence saving about 30 turtles from being struck by automobiles, and in February when three baby Vallarta turtles were born in captivity for the first time.

“The hatching of the Vallarta mud turtle is a testament to the remarkable stress resilience of these incredible creatures,” Praschag said in a statement. “Despite facing numerous challenges in their natural habitat, they have shown the ability to overcome adversity and thrive in a protected environment.”

‘Recovering bigot’ offers free hugs to say sorry

With the polarization that we experience today it’s important to remember that people can learn, change and grow from their previous mistakes, as is evident with a Colorado man showing up to Denver’s Pride holding a sign reading, “Recovering bigot, I am sorry! Free hugs.”

The man and his sign were captured on TikTok.

“To own up to your discriminatory beliefs and say: ‘I hear you, I see you, and I’m sorry’, is top tier. Everyone could learn something here,” the TikTok poster said.

A photo of the man’s sign made it onto Twitter where people talked about how Pride is a perfect time to make amends for previous misdeeds.

According to Denver Pride, the event was attended by more than 500,000 people.

One woman’s fundraising mission out of love for her nephew

Tamara Ward is on a continuous fundraising mission in aid of people living with Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of childhood epilepsy affecting one in every 15,000 people in the UK.

Fantastic! What’s the challenge?

In 2021, Tamara started running five kilometres every day in May, after visiting her seven-year-old nephew, Dominic, during the Covid lockdowns.

She has run throughout May every year since – and hundreds of people have joined her!

So far the Run 5km Everyday In May For Dravet challenge has raised £240,000 for the charity, Dravet Syndrome UK.

Galia Wilson, the charity’s chair and trustee, has a son with the syndrome and has also joined the challenge.

She explained that the funds would support vital awareness-raising and research to help those affected by the condition. “It’s also important for us to find families that are living in isolation without the support that our charity could provide them,” she added.
