UK's first vegan Cadbury bars on their way

Going vegan is said by researchers to be the “single biggest way” we can reduce our emissions as individuals. So it’s positive news that Mondelēz International, the owner of Cadbury, will introduce two flavours of vegan chocolate bars to supermarket shelves this November.

Cadbury’s milk chocolate bar and another mixed with salted caramel pieces will become available in the UK and Ireland for £2.50 each. Sainsbury’s stores will sell the bars from next month and additional retailers will introduce it to their stores from January 2022.

Reacting to the announcement, Ericka Durgahee of the Vegan Society said: “As we approach World Vegan Day on 1 November, the Vegan Society is thrilled that anyone who misses Cadbury chocolate as a vegan can now enjoy [it] without the use of animal products.”

An appetite for sustainability

To make the bar fully plant-based, Cadbury has replaced milk with an almond paste that it says “provides a similar taste and texture to milk ingredients while offering a hint of nuttiness”.

The UK managing director of Mondelēz International, Louise Stigant, explained that the company is seeing an increasing demand for vegan options, saying: “Evolving consumer demands have long informed our ambition to provide a wide range of products that work for everyone and the new Cadbury Plant Bar range is the latest stop on this journey.”

The chocolate bar wrappers are low-impact too, made from 100% plant-based and recycled materials. This follows the company’s announcement that it aims to use more recycled packaging for Cadbury chocolate bars.
