Animal lovers around the world are turning their eyes to Ukraine, where abandoned pets are suffering as their owners are forced to flee to safety without them.
If you’re hoping to help these animals there are plenty of charities working hard to protect these lesser-considered war victims. Here are just a few of the organisations you can donate to or support in order to further their cause.
Dog protection charity Pawsitivity has launched an emergency fundraising drive to support canines in Ukraine. All donations to this appeal will go towards rescuing abandoned and injured dogs, providing them with food, veterinary care and a loving home in the safety of a nearby country.
Network for Animals
International animal welfare charity Network for Animals is dedicated to helping animals in difficult situations around the world. Their Ukraine appeal focuses on dogs and cats which have been abandoned or injured due to the invasion. Already they have set up a shelter in the city of Starokostyantyniv in western Ukraine. To defend the lives of hundreds more cats and dogs, they hope to expand elsewhere.
While other charities deal with problems faced by animals on the streets of Ukrainian cities, Peta is lobbying policymakers to help. They have sent a letter to the secretary of state for environment, food, and rural affairs, George Eustice, urging him to relax restrictions on refugees entering the UK with companion animals. You can help further their campaign work by donating today.
International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
IFAW is helping over 1000 animals in Ukraine Worryingly, their partner shelter in Gorlovka, eastern Ukraine, was hit by a shell and severely damaged. Only one of the dogs there was killed but now they desperately need funds to buy dry dog food and make repairs.
