We believe in hope. We believe in optimism.
We believe small actions can make a big impact.

Creativity for the Greater Good.

At Smiley Movement, we believe in the power of hope and the strength of optimism. We know that even the smallest actions can create a ripple effect, leading to meaningful change.

That's why our mission is simple yet powerful: Creativity for the Greater Good - inspiring positive change in society by shining a spotlight on the people and organisations making a real difference in our world.

Our journey began in 1971 when Franklin Loufrani created Smiley to highlight positive news in France Soir newspaper. Decades later, his son Nicolas launched Smiley Movement as a non-profit platform empowering people to engage with and drive positive change.

Aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and focused on apolitical, solutions-based journalism; through Smiley News, we champion the stories that uplift, empower, and inspire. With our positive news and solutions journalism, we bring you stories of innovation, kindness, and community impact—stories that show the world at its best and remind us that change is possible when we work together.

We exist to spotlight those who are making a difference and to empower others to take action. Whether it’s volunteering, donating, fundraising, or launching new initiatives, we believe in helping people find their own way to make the world a better place.

Join us as we build a global community that uses creativity for the greater good. Together, we can turn small actions into a big impact—creating a more hopeful, connected, and positive world for everyone.

What do we do?

Smiley Movement delivers news with a difference.

Our goal is for every article, every video, every piece of content to create a positive impact. Whether that’s through encouraging donations and volunteering, or simply raising the public profile of charities doing important work, we are working towards a world where all charities have the resources they need.

At Smiley Movement, we love to highlight the incredible volunteers, staff, ambassadors and beneficiaries of charities that keep our world moving. Our content is solutions-focused - because we know that the world is changing for the better, and we will be on the front lines of every moment.

We don’t just spread positivity, we inspire action.

How do we do it?

We deliver our Smiley News through inspiring features, and uplifting videos about individuals and organisations on a mission to achieve a better world.

We host Speak Up! by Smiley Movement, thought-provoking panel talks with inspiring changemakers, to discuss how we can work together to make our world a better place.

Every year, we host the Charity Film Awards, the world’s largest cause-based film festival, which platforms charity films and gives recognition to incredible causes.

We also have a Matchmaking for Good service, where we add purpose to Smiley’s commercial partnerships by connecting CSR initiatives to charitable projects to generate social impact.

Why do we do it?

All the work we do is designed to shine the spotlight on not-for-profits, helping them to communicate their work and mission to the world.

As a Community Interest Company (CIC), we have a clear mission:

  • To engage the public in charity work.

  • To give charities a platform.

  • To challenge the bad news bias.

  • To inspire people to work for positive change.

We’d love you to be a part of it. If you’d like to share your story, get involved, or nominate a charity to feature, email [email protected].

How did we get here?

In 1971, France Soir newspaper editor, Franklin Loufrani, used the Smiley in his newspaper to highlight the positivity in the world.

Almost 50 years later, in 2018, Franklin’s son Nicolas – Smiley’s CEO – came up with the idea to launch Smiley Movement: a nonprofit aiming to give people the information and tools they need to create and engage with positive change.

We want to give a platform to those who are passionate about making our world a better place, and we want to shine a light on the charity sector. Why? Because 82% of our survey respondents said they’d volunteer more if they knew more about it.
