As the New Year arrives, it brings with it resolutions, goals, and the annual list of honours, announced on 30th December 2024. These awards, appointed by King Charles III, celebrate outstanding contributions across the 15 Commonwealth realms and form part of the traditional New Year celebrations. They recognise individuals for their exceptional service in various fields.
Here are some of the notable figures honoured this year:
Stephen Fry
Actor, screenwriter, and author Stephen Fry has been knighted for his extensive work in mental health awareness, environmental advocacy, and charity. Since 2011, he has served as president of Mind, the leading mental health charity, and has been Vice-President of Fauna & Flora International since 2009.
Jeremy Michael Isaacs CBE
Former television executive and producer Jeremy Isaacs, who received a CBE in 1993, is recognised once again in 2025 for his commitment to philanthropy and children’s hospice care. He is currently the Honorary Life Chair at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice.
Gareth Southgate OBE
Gareth Southgate, the recently retired England football manager, was awarded an OBE in 2019 for his services to football. This year, his achievements were further recognised with a knighthood following England’s impressive second-place finish at the 2024 Euros.
Dame Jacqueline Wilson DBE
Dame Jacqueline Wilson, the celebrated children’s author, was first honoured with a DBE in 2008 for her contributions to literature. This year, she has been elevated with the Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE), a recognition of her continued influence in the literary world.
Professor Sir Leszek Krzysztof Borysiewicz
Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, a distinguished academic and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, has been knighted for his significant contributions to higher education and biomedical sciences.
Humphrey William Battcock
Humphrey William Battcock, philanthropist and founder of the Centre for Homelessness Impact, has been awarded a CBE for his tireless work in tackling homelessness and his contributions to education.
