Access to contraception has changed the lives of millions, giving women and families the power to decide their futures. While public policy and healthcare providers play a key role, behind the scenes, a handful of bold philanthropists have pushed the movement forward with funding, influence and determination.
For World Contraception Day, here are three philanthropists who’ve championed the cause of contraception and reproductive rights – and helped change the world in the process.
Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Melinda French Gates has committed over $1 billion to family planning initiatives. Her mission is simple: ensure that every woman has access to the contraceptive tools and information she needs. She’s also used her platform to normalise the conversation around contraception, particularly in low-income countries, where cultural stigma and lack of infrastructure can make access difficult.
A suffragist and biologist by training, McCormick played a pivotal role in the development of the first oral contraceptive. Using her personal wealth, she quietly funded the research led by Gregory Pincus and supported Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood. Without her funding, the pill might have remained a dream for decades longer.
Soros’s Open Society Foundations have long supported reproductive rights, especially in regions where governments suppress access to contraception. His funding has helped grassroots organisations deliver services, fight misinformation and advocate for policy change.
At Smiley Movement, we like to elevate the work of charities across the world. Here are three charities whose causes align with the themes in this article.
