5 things you can do for Random Acts of Kindness Day

Words by Abi Scaife

It’s almost Random Acts of Kindness Day - definitely one of our favourite days of the year!

Having said that, smiling at strangers and petting every dog you see can feel a little stale when you’re doing it every day anyway. That’s why we put together this list of ideas for fun things you can do to brighten someone’s day this year!

So, without further ado - here’s your RAOK inspo for 2024!

GIVE OUT FLOWERS.

We’re not saying buy whole bouquets of roses for random strangers (unless you have those kinds of funds!) but pop to Tescos - or even better, your local florists - and buy a bunch of flowers. You can then separate that and give out the individual blooms to anyone you want, whether that’s strangers on the street, your colleagues at work, or someone you love.

SEND HANDWRITTEN NOTES.

Leave them on your train seat for whoever sits there next, in a library book, or send them to someone specific - it doesn’t matter! Everyone loves a handwritten note or letter - emails are overrated. It doesn’t even have to be long or particularly soppy, sometimes it’s just nice to know you’ve been thought of.

CALL SOMEONE YOU LOVE.

Especially if you haven’t talked to them in a while, or you know they’re struggling. Messaging can be overwhelming, and it’s nice just to hear someone’s voice. Even if they don’t have time to talk, at least they know you care enough to try.

PAY IT BACK.

A drive-thru, a coffee shop, a bookstore - if you can afford to, it’s nice to cover someone’s order just because. The surprise of realising someone is doing something nice for a stranger will always bring a smile to your face - and seeing that reaction means everything!

GET LITTER PICKING.

Our public spaces belong to us all - and wildlife, too - and it’s important to keep them clean. When you’re out and about today, consider picking up any litter you see and binning it - or be more intentional and get in touch with your local council to borrow some litter-picking equipment! When our surroundings are clean and safe we can all enjoy them.
