5 positive ways to help Haitian earthquake victims

Words by Smiley Team

Thousands of people have been affected after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Saturday 14 August. But the positive news is there’s a lot the international community can do to support the recovery.

Locally-based charities are working flat-out to distribute shelters, food, water filtration kits and more. Organisations are tailoring this support to different groups of vulnerable people – be they children, women and girls, or those worse hit – ensuring aid gets to those who most need it first.

Show solidarity to these local charities and further their efforts by donating to the following initiatives.

1. Protect the children of Haiti

Distributing food, shelters and hygiene kits, UNICEF is ensuring families can look after their children. They’ve launched a campaign where you can make a large, one-off donation between £33 and £60 that will buy emergency supplies and equipment. Or you can opt into a monthly contribution of £5 to £15 to help children access education and basic necessities like food in the long term.

2. Ensure children can survive

Like UNICEF, Save the Children is also offering support primarily to children. Their nutrition, education and protection programmes in the area are adapting in response to the emergency by asking members of the public to contribute to their emergency fund and protect young lives.

3. Help women and girls

As a long-standing supporter of Haitian people, ActionAid is leading a programme focused on supplying women and girls with food and hygiene products. In response to this most recent earthquake, they are appealing for donations which will pay for emergency supplies as well as heightened protection for women and girls.

4. Support disabled earthquake victims

Help disabled Haitians affected by the earthquake by donating to Humanity and Inclusion’s emergency appeal. The charity works locally to support those experiencing poverty, exclusion and conflict. Now, following the disaster they will scale up their efforts to provide for disabled and vulnerable victims.

5. Support those worse hit

The British Red Cross has launched an emergency response to the earthquake in the areas affected, supporting health services and delivering food, water, shelter, and hygiene kits. To continue their urgent relief efforts they are asking for one-off donations of £30 to £100.
