Transgender icons have long played a pivotal role in shaping the visibility, rights, and acceptance of transgender individuals worldwide. 

On Transgender Day of Visibility, we celebrate those that are in the UK and beyond, on their contributions to both trans and human rights worldwide. 

Figures such as the ones on this list have not only challenged societal norms but have become powerful symbols of resilience and empowerment. Their stories inspire and educate, showcasing the diverse experiences of transgender people while also highlighting the ongoing struggle for equal rights and respect.

Sapir Berman

Also known to be the First trans woman football referee, Sapir Berman from Israel is a fierce advocate for transgender rights and mental health awareness. Through her work, Sapir has aimed to reshape the narrative surrounding transgender lives in her home country and beyond. Berman’s efforts to raise awareness of the struggles that transgender people face, particularly in terms of access to healthcare and legal rights, have made her a significant voice in both Israeli and international transgender activism.

Content creator and musician, NOAHFINNCE has made waves in the digital and music worlds by being unapologetically himself and using his platform to speak out on issues surrounding gender identity and mental health. Known for his witty and sometimes controversial content, NOAHFINNCE has been open about his experiences as a transgender man, navigating the complexities of societal expectations and self-acceptance. Both his digital platform and his music platform have given him the opportunity to create an inclusive space where people of all identities can feel seen and heard. 

Chris Mosier

Making history as the first openly transgender man to represent the United States in the International Triathlon Union’s World Championship. Chris Mosier’s journey as a professional athlete broke down barriers, challenging outdated perceptions that transgender individuals couldn’t compete at elite levels. By succeeding in a field that historically rejected the idea of transgender athletes, Chris has become an advocate for fairness and inclusivity in sports.

Chella Man

The US-based artist, actor, and activist, has become a powerful voice within the transgender and deaf communities. Known for his work in film and social media, Chella uses his platform to challenge stereotypes and break down barriers around gender identity and disability. As one of the few openly transgender men of colour in the entertainment industry, he has become a trailblazer for greater representation in media. Chella is also vocal about his experience as a deaf individual, advocating for the intersectionality of both his trans and disability identities, and inspiring others to embrace their authentic selves.

Bob the Drag Queen

One of the most recognisable drag performers and winner of RuPaul's Drag Race season 8, Christopher Delmar Caldwell, known by his stage name Caldwell Tidicue and more widely recognised by his drag persona Bob the Drag Queen. Many people do not know that the person behind Bob the Drag Queen identities as Non Binary. Bob has worked tirelessly to deconstruct gender expectations through their drag persona and champions representation for trans people  of colour throughout their career. By using their platform to amplify the voices of marginalized groups within the LGBTQ+ community, Bob challenges the limitations placed on gender expression.

Cherry Valentine

Another contestant on the famous Drag Race franchise, George Ward the person behind Cherry Valentine was a beloved figure in the UK, known for their appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and their advocacy work for the transgender community. Unfortunately passing away in 2022, their presence in the UK is still felt. Cherry, a drag queen who identified as genderfluid, was known for combining their passion for drag performance with a powerful message about trans inclusion and acceptance. As a member of the English Traveller community, Cherry was able to share their unique experiences with the world. 

Munroe Bergdorf

Many people in the UK know Munroe Bergdorf, the British model and activist who has become one of the most vocal advocates for transgender rights in the UK. Munroe’s activism gained significant attention after their work addressing issues such as race, gender identity, and intersectionality. Her unapologetic presence in the media and outspoken views on racism within the LGBTQ+ community has also challenged the marginalisation of trans people of colour. 

Elliot Page

Elliot Page

Many of us grew up seeing Elliot Page on our screens, however the Canadian actor came out as transgender in 2020 and has become one of the most prominent voices in Hollywood advocating for transgender representation. With roles in films such as Juno and Inception, Elliot’s transition was met with an outpouring of support and a renewed focus on transgender visibility in mainstream media. Elliot’s public transition marked a turning point in how the media and audiences engage with transgender narratives, proving that there is a place for transgender people in all aspects of public life, including acting and entertainment. Elliot's advocacy extends beyond his own experience, as he continues to fight for the rights of transgender individuals, particularly trans youth.
