L’Oréal sets precedent for gender equality in business

In a positive step towards the UN sustainable development goal of gender equality, L’Oréal has been recognised as a leader for promoting equity across its leadership and staff members. The company is celebrating after it featured on Bloomberg’s 2021 Gender Equality Index (GEI) for the fourth consecutive year.

Assessing 380 companies across 44 countries and regions, the GEI is based on criteria such as female leadership and talent pipeline, gender pay parity, inclusive culture and sexual harassment policies.

Among the key staff members ensuring the workplace is as equal as possible is executive vice-president human relations at L’Oréal Jean-Claude Le Grand says: “This is a recognition of our long-term efforts to empower people of all genders as part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion at all levels and in all functions of the company. We are convinced that gender equity is a strategic lever to increase wellbeing at work, fuel creativity and innovation, and boost performance and growth."

Steps towards equity at work

To drive equality in their company, L’Oréal works with two independent organisations: Economic Dividends for Gender Equality (EDGE) and Gender Equality European and International Standard (GEEIS). These organisations conduct in-depth audits of gender equality in their staff and hiring policies.

If you work for a company and are keen to improve gender equality in your workplace, you can get certificated by EDGE, a process through which the organisation measures a company’s success at implementing policies for gender equality.
