A Quick Guide to Keep Pets Safe in the Heat

This week is going to be HOT!

And while we may enjoy the much needed temperature rise, it's crucial to take extra care of our pets to prevent heat-related health issues.

Overheating can lead to serious conditions like heatstroke, dehydration, or even death, especially in vulnerable pets. Leading animal welfare organisations, such as the RSPCA and PDSA, offer expert advice to ensure our furry companions stay safe and comfortable.

Here are some simple, but effective, tips to help protect pets during hot weather.

What Are the Tips?

  1. Provide fresh water
Always ensure your pet has access to clean, fresh water to prevent dehydration
  2. Create a cool, shaded space
Set up a shaded area for pets to rest in, away from direct sunlight.
  3. Avoid walking in the heat
Limit walks to early mornings or late evenings, avoiding the hottest part of the day (11 am – 4 pm).
  4. Never leave pets in cars
Never leave pets unattended in a car, even with windows open, as temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
  5. Groom regularly
Regularly groom pets with long coats, but avoid shaving them completely to protect their skin.
  6. Use cooling products
Consider pet-safe cooling mats, vests, or fans to help keep your pet comfortable.
  7. Watch for signs of overheating
Be alert to symptoms of heatstroke such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If you suspect heatstroke, contact a vet immediately.
