Back2Basics brings nature to recovery programs

Words by Tess Becker

Many addiction recovery programs fall under a similar umbrella – and the way they go about treatment, while diverse, follows a pretty standard formula. That’s a formula that Back2Basics Outdoor Adventure Recovery wanted to change.

On top of all the therapeutic modes that many recovery programs use, Back2Basics also is an ‘outdoor adventure recovery program’ and over a 6-month period, people are exposed to a weekly combination of wilderness therapy and addiction treatment.

In the 13 years they’ve been operating, 300-400 people have been supported.

The founder of Back2Basics, Roy DuPrez, was finishing up college and saw that there was something missing in treatment programs.

“I just saw this vacuum that wasn't being addressed in the field of treatment, specifically, because there's been just more of a traditional standard,” Roy tells Smiley News.

Through Back2Basics he wanted to offer other options to people who may struggle with the idea of even seeking help, let alone actually utilizing it.

Since such a large part of the program is in the wilderness they employ wilderness guides who have a lot of experience in the regions they travel. “The outdoor guides really do a great job of working with the weather, and just keeping us on our toes,” Roy says.
