Crafts supporting vulnerable kids this Christmas

Words by Smiley Team

How creative are you going to get this Christmas?

Barnardo’s children’s charity is calling on people to get crafty this Christmas time by stitching, glue-gunning, knitting, and sewing, all to raise money for its Kidsmas appeal.

With the help of the experts at CraftWorld and designer Sue Stratford, Barnardo’s has five free crafty designs for people to choose from, including sparkly cards, a cute, crocheted snowman, a cuddly knitted snowman, fun felt decorations and a Christmas cross stitch design.

By getting involved, you're supporting vulnerable children in the UK. You can donate, raise money online or make as many Kidsmas snowmen as you can and sell them to friends and family, or in schools, stores, and local businesses.

Every penny raised will go towards Barnardo’s Kidsmas campaign, which will help the charity to continue providing vital support to vulnerable children, not only at Christmas time but all year round.

Barnardo’s interim co-CEO Michelle Lee-Izu said: For lots of children, Christmas is a time for family, festivities and fun. But for many of the vulnerable children Barnardo’s supports it often comes with serious challenges.

“This year, with, poverty, bereavement, mental health issues, loneliness and abuse having risen in the wake of the Covid pandemic, even more children will be deprived of the chance to enjoy the festive season.

“That’s why this year’s Kidsmas campaign is so important, and your involvement in Crafty Kidsmas can make a massive difference. By knitting a snowman, creating your own cards, having fun with felt, or even just by buying a craft from a friend, you could help spread a little Christmas magic to vulnerable children this year, and help Barnardo’s to support them all year round. "

The Kidsmas campaign, which is now in its third year, aims to help vulnerable children rediscover the magic of Christmas throughout the festive season.

It can be a wonderfully magical time for children – whether it's writing to Santa, putting out carrots for flying reindeer or wrapping up warm for a snowball fight with friends.  But while many of us look forward to festivities and quality time with our families, too many children and young people feel left out.

Barnardo’s is asking people across the country to come together with families, friends, and communities to raise vital funds to help vulnerable children feel part of a happy, safe, and caring Christmas – and can access support all year round.

Visit Barnados website to find out how you can take part in Crafty Kidsmas or get involved in other aspects of the campaign to raise vital funds so we can continue to help vulnerable children in the UK experience the magic of the festive season.

You can also donate to the charity to help them bring magic to kids at Christmas.
