Colleagues come together for isolation-beating Boss Bike Rides

Words by Smiley Team

Two charity bosses have teamed up to encourage workers - from CEOs to new hires - to come together for a series of group bike rides.

Boss Bike Rides was founded by two charity CEOs dedicated to improving the lives of children and young people in the East Midlands, with the aim of beating the loneliness and isolation many workers have experienced during the pandemic, as well as raising money.

Two or more workers are encouraged to get together for a cycle ride anywhere in the world, and use the experience to meet, network, socialise and support each other. They can also download a fundraising pack and use the opportunity to raise money for charity.

Boss Bike Rides hope the rides will clock up 1,000,000km collectively, and raise £100,000 to support young people in their area.

Marcellus Baz is the founder and CEO of Switch Up CIC and the Nottingham School of Boxing, and one of the architects of the campaign. His organisations use sport, mentoring, education and counselling to transform the lives of young people and help them to access employment, training, and further education.

He said: “Cycling, and fitness in general, are a central part of positive wellbeing. We’re hoping that this initiative has a positive impact on the professionals that take part, as well as going a long way to providing funds during a particularly difficult time for the region’s disadvantaged young people.”

Boss Bike Rides co-founder is Nick Owen, CEO at The Mighty Creatives charity. They help improve young people’s lives through arts, culture and creativity.

Nick added: “Ever since Marcellus and I went to explore the countryside around our local area, and got lost on the way, we appreciated the value of cycling together to share stories and opinions, doubts and fears – and our hopes and dreams for young people across the East Midlands.

“Getting lost proved to be a powerful incentive for us to start the Boss Bike Ride campaign and encourage others to share their experiences, learn new skills and approaches and improve their mental and physical health.

“We welcome all to join us, irrespective of your cycling skill and sense of direction, and we’ll be with you all the way.”

Funds raised will be split between the two charities and the Youth Cultural Life Fund, a grant giving fund which accepts applications from small charities and young people living in the East Midlands.
