Broadcaster Kate Garraway Launches UK’s First Carers’ ID Card

Broadcaster Kate Garraway has praised the UK’s first-ever ID and discount card for carers as “positive and practical,” at its official launch on November 18 at the Houses of Parliament. The Blue Sky Social Care Card, aimed at benefiting both paid and unpaid carers, is set to roll out across the country to acknowledge the vital role carers play in society.

The card serves as both an employee ID and a way to access discounts, recognising carers for their unwavering commitment to those they look after.

At the event, hosted by Catherine Atkinson MP, Kate reflected on her own experience caring for her husband Derek Draper, who battled COVID for four years. She spoke movingly about the isolation, love, and pride she felt as a carer, while also emphasising the challenges of the role.

"Being a carer is a gift, but it can also be incredibly isolating and emotionally taxing," Garraway said. "When I was at my lowest, the sense of a global 'web of love' from other carers was a great comfort. This card makes a tangible, practical difference by recognising the importance of carers and supporting them in their daily lives."

Kate, who now advocates for carers following Derek’s passing earlier this year, was one of the first to receive the Blue Sky Social Care Card. She expressed her support for the card’s role in formally recognising carers, calling it a powerful way to honour their contributions.

The event also marked the launch of an app for the Blue Sky Social Care Card, which is now being recognised by employers, retailers, and restaurants, including nationwide chain Oodles. Raj Johal, managing director of Blue Sky Social Care Card, highlighted the impact the card will have on carers, helping ease the financial burden while offering much-needed recognition.

The launch took place during Carers Rights Day, a time to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of carers nationwide. Garraway, Atkinson, and other attendees, including representatives from the National Association of Care and Support Workers and Disability Direct, celebrated the initiative’s potential to support carers across the UK.
