California has a massive flower "superbloom"

Words by Tess Becker

California was battered by recent storms with high winds toppling trees, heavy rainfall leading to flooding and mudslides, and even a rare tornado in Southern California.

All this weather, and some of it even deadly bad, has at least led to something beautiful. This year new ‘superblooms’ are popping up around California with so much color and range that they can be seen from space.

California had a similar super bloom in 2019.

There are 11 sites listed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation that offer incredible views of the flowers.

There is no scientific definition of what a super bloom is, but if there are enough flowers to cover entire valleys that’s probably a good start.

“The superbloom is really a cultural phenomenon, where people decide that there are enough flowers here, right now, that we’ll call it a superbloom,” Daniel Winkler, a research ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Southwest Biological Science Center, told the LA Times

The California Parks and Rec recommend downloading an app like iNaturalist before you go to see the flowers so you can identify them and hopefully learn a little while checking out the views.
