Shropshire-based Cancer trust, Lingen Davies, has launched a campaign to give prison staff and inmates cancer awareness training.
At HMP YOI Stoke Heath Prison in Market Drayton, individuals are undergoing training as “Cancer Champions” as part of an ongoing cancer awareness initiative. Governor Mark Greenhaf of Stoke Heath Prison expressed that this initiative is a valuable method to engage with prisoners and prioritise their well-being.\
In a quote he said: “I am so pleased Lingen Davies has trained staff and prisoners to be Cancer Champions – the statistics for cancer are frightening.
“It has already become apparent, through conversations already had, that so many people here are impacted by cancer – directly or indirectly.”
Since the program began in April, four members of staff and nine prisoners have been trained, but there are plans for more to receive the training in the upcoming months.
This news follows a football tournament in March involving both prisoners and staff that has raised nearly £1,000 for cancer patients. As the charity has been chosen as Stoke Heath Prison’s charity of the year, this is only the beginning of their year-long commitment to raising donations for Ligen Davies.
