Charity supports 3.5 million homeless pets in one year

January is Walk Your Dog Month, a time to ensure you and your canine friend are getting enough exercise. But while dogs across the country are treated to regular walks with their owners, others are without a home or human companion. Helping to reverse this by housing millions of abandoned pets and caring for them in their rescue centres, Support Adoption for Pets has seen a massive boost from fundraising efforts via their founder, the retailer, Pets at Home.

Thanks to donations from shoppers, the company raised £1.7 million to support pets spending Christmas in a rescue centre, as part of Pets at Home’s annual Santa Paws fundraiser, launched on 23rd November 2020. Partly as a result of this support, the organisation managed to help 3.5 million homeless pets last year.

Support Adoption For Pets fundraising manager, Amy Wilson said: “This year we hoped to help 3 million pets. We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers and when we found out that we had not only achieved this but exceeded it, we were absolutely delighted.

“These much-needed funds will go to support the vital work of local rescue and rehoming charities keeping abandoned pets healthy and safe until they find a permanent home.

“We would like to thank everybody who donated. Your generosity has brought a wagging tail and a happy Christmas to the pets who needed it most.”

Help drive paws-itive change

Established by Pets at Home in 2006, Support Adoption for Pets rescues unwanted and abandoned animals, looks after them in over 1,000 adoption centres across the UK and finds them new homes.

To help the organisation in their mission to ensure pets are well cared for, you can contribute via their donations page. £3 can feed a kitten for a week, £5 covers enrichment items to keep a pet healthy, £10 can pay for two health checks for rabbits and £10 helps offer a safe place for a dog to stay overnight.
