Ahead of VE Day’s 80th anniversary, every child across the UK is being invited to connect with a WWII veteran.
The ‘VE Mail’ initiative invites every child across the country to connect with a WWII veteran through letter writing.
Schools and youth organisations can sign up to receive personal letters from surviving veterans, sharing their wartime experiences and reflections on the significance of victory in Europe. In return, children can write back, expressing gratitude and reflecting on the sacrifices made 80 years ago.
In a statement by Tom Jones, a WWII veteran, he explained, “The values we fought for are as relevant today as they were then. With fewer veterans still with us, VE Mail offers a vital opportunity to pass on our memories.”
Supported by Royal Mail, this initiative also aims to revive the art of letter writing while educating children about the sacrifices made during WWII. As Kate Stokes, Headteacher of James Brindley Community Primary School, noted, it gives students a “deeply personal way” to connect with history.
Part of wider VE Day celebrations, VE Mail offers a unique chance for children to engage with the past and ensure that the legacy of WWII veterans endures for generations to come.
