Forget John Lewis, this ad wins Christmas

Words by Smiley Team

A Christmas advert from The Communication Workers Union is celebrating the key workers who have worked so tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

The advert centres on a young girl and her mum in the run up to Christmas. It starts with the young girl passing on her letter to Santa Claus to the postman, who promises to keep it safe.

But due to supply chain issues, there are reports of empty shelves and supermarket struggles. When the mum’s internet goes down, an Openreach engineer comes to reboot it for her – by which time the superhero gift she wanted to buy for her daughter has sold out.

When it’s Christmas morning, the young girl wakes up excitedly and runs down stairs to see what has been left under the tree. Her mum looks on with dismay, when suddenly the doorbell rings. They open it to find the postman and engineer dressed up in superhero gear, to the young girl’s delight. She joins them in a costume, and they have fun in the garden together.

“Throughout the pandemic, CWU members have raised thousands of pounds for charity and kept every community in the UK connected,” the advert shares.

“To us, they are superheroes every day. Merry Christmas from the Communications Workers Union.”

In response, one person commented: “Not sure if that was meant to make me shed a tear, but anyway…”

Another said: “Massive thank you to my posties for delivering endless parcels of heavy books.”

Broadcaster Richie Brave reposted the video, adding: “This is so touching. Also an apt nod to how these workers have kept us going through the pandemic… from our internet connections to our post. Definitely heroes for me. I’ve learned so much from The CWU about pay, working conditions. Give them a follow!”

And filmmaker Peter Stefanovic said: “The superb @CWUnews Christmas advert has now rocketed past 500,000 views. It’s members worked tirelessly to keep the country connected throughout the pandemic so let’s get it to a million for them by Christmas.”

The Communication Workers Union is the biggest union for the communications industry in the UK with almost 200,000 members. They work hard to get voices heard on a variety of subjects such as fair pay, pensions, terms and conditions, health and safety, equal opportunities and politics.
