For almost as long as we can remember, our four-legged companions have had an immeasurable impact on our lives, offering not only loyal companionship but also heroic service in times of need.

This International Dog Day, we’re shining a spotlight on some remarkable dogs that have made a profound difference in the world, from saving lives in times of war to bringing comfort to those in need.

Crumstone Irma

Crumstone Irma

One of the most heroic figures of the Second World War, Crumstone Irma was a German Shepherd search-and-rescue dog who saved 191 people during the Blitz. Using her keen senses and determination, Irma would bark to signal whether a person was “alive” or “dead” under the rubble, helping rescuers locate survivors. Her extraordinary bravery earned her the prestigious Dickin Medal, making her a legend of wartime heroism.

Jet of Iada

Another WWII legend, Jet was a rescue dog who saved over 150 people from bombed buildings in London. Her instinctive search-and-rescue skills were so remarkable that she was awarded both the Dickin Medal and the RSPCA’s Medallion for Valor. Jet's story is a testament to the incredible bond between humans and dogs during the most challenging times.

Rip

Rip’s story is one of transformation and heroism. An untrained stray dog, Rip was found on the streets of London during the Blitz and went on to rescue more than 100 people from the wreckage of bombed buildings. He became the UK’s first recognized search-and-rescue dog, proving that sometimes the most unlikely heroes come in four paws and a wagging tail.

Finn

Finn the Dog

Finn is a modern-day hero whose bravery transcended the call of duty. A police dog, Finn was stabbed during a confrontation while protecting his handler. His survival and remarkable recovery led to the creation of Finn’s Law, which provides stronger legal protection for service animals. Finn’s sacrifice has left a lasting legacy, ensuring that future working dogs are better safeguarded.

Pudding

Not all heroes wear capes, or in this case, police uniforms. Pudding, a Jack Russell therapy dog, plays an integral role at Share Community in Wandsworth, helping students with learning disabilities and autism. Through her gentle nature and comforting presence, Pudding brings calm and joy to those who need it most, proving that sometimes the smallest dogs make the biggest difference.

Geoffrey

Geoffrey dog

Geoffrey the long-haired miniature Dachshund is a beloved member of the Pets as Therapy programme. Visiting NHS hospitals across the UK, Geoffrey offers comfort to patients, reducing stress and lifting spirits during their hospital stays. His visits are a reminder of the healing power of love, affection, and, of course, a wagging tail.
