Free prom dresses in New Hampshire

Words by Smiley Team

Prom season is in full swing for U.S. students – and with that comes exorbitant costs.

Most prom tickets alone are around $100 and that doesn’t include the fashion, which for a tux rental is usually $140 but for a prom dress can be as expensive as $600.

A Visa study even found that for the average family, prom costs around $1,139. That's why one New Hampshire store is looking to remedy that dress cost.

Missy’s Closet is hosting it's fourth annual “Say Yes to the Prom Dress” event in which they provide free dresses to those in need. This year they’re looking to give out more than 1,000 dresses.

The dresses are mostly donations and are either new or gently used. They even got a set of dresses from the Miss New Hampshire collegiate pageant.

The event isn’t just limited to dresses, as Missy’s Closet is looking to provide shoes, makeup, and jewelry to girls that need it for prom.

“When they come in, they get assigned to a fashion ambassador who can help them find the right dress,” Missy’s Closet co-manager Heidi Cantin told WMUR. “We have someone helping to do free alterations, they get free shoes, makeup, jewelry, the whole thing.”

The event is going to be taking place throughout April, popping up every Saturday and Sunday leading up to prom, except for Easter Sunday.
