Global recycling heroes offered chance to win $500

Words by Smiley Team

To spotlight vital recycling efforts around the world, The Global Recycling Foundation is calling for people to nominate the most innovative recycling projects for a prize of $500 each. The winners will be announced for Global Recycling Day on 18th March 2021.

The organisation is on the hunt for all kinds of initiatives, from individuals to business leaders, sole traders to multinational businesses, communities, towns and cities that have gone above and beyond to continue recycling during the Covid-19 crisis.

Ten nominees will be chosen for the cash prize and will also have their projects promoted across The Global Recycling Foundation’s social media platforms with the hashtag #RecyclingHeroes.

The organisation’s founding president, Ranjit Baxi, (pictured) commented: “We want to champion Recycling Heroes during a particularly difficult year, and encourage the world to recognize the critical importance that recycling makes to the preservation of our planet.”

“Every year on Global Recycling Day we applaud the innovative recycling practices of our heroes and report what they have achieved to our millions of supporters around the world.”

Let’s talk rubbish: tell the world about your recycling heroes

If you know of a valuable recycling initiative that deserves recognition, you can nominate a project through the Global Recycling Day website.

Last year’s winners included some inspiring endeavours, including a running club that combined exercise with litter collection in Nigeria, and an organisation creating ‘recycled play stations’ for children out of discarded tyres and scraps in India.

Championing the cause

The Global Recycling Foundation promotes recycling as a means of creating a more sustainable future for the planet and people. Working with the UN to make waste reduction a truly global concern, they lead educational programmes, campaigns and petitions.

It is a private organisation but they rely heavily on donations to function. Those interested in becoming a sponsor can donate to the foundation via their website.

Funding will go towards their campaigns encouraging people around the world to recycle more and help combat the climate crisis.
