Honouring Black History Month

11:38, 29 October 2024

Words by Cheyanne Bryan, Editorial and Campaign Marketing Executive, London

While it may seem unconventional to feature a Black History Month article at the end of the month, we believe it is essential to emphasise that our commitment to celebrating and supporting Black communities extends beyond a single month.

We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment year-round and with this article, we want to promote recognition.

About Black History Month

Black History Month, celebrated every October in the United Kingdom, serves as a vital platform for recognising and uplifting the contributions, achievements, and experiences of Black individuals and communities throughout history.

While it is also celebrated in the US and Canada in February, this annual observance not only highlights the rich tapestry of Black history but also fosters a deeper understanding of the ongoing and current experiences of Black people across the diaspora.

What to Do

While it may not seem straightforward, to honour Black History Month, individuals can engage in various activities that promote awareness and appreciation of Black history and culture. Some suggestions include:

Expand your knowledge: Enhance your understanding of Black history and culture through diverse educational resources. Read books, watch documentaries, listen to podcasts, and engage in meaningful conversations with others to explore significant experiences, influential figures, and contemporary challenges faced by the Black community.

Support Black-owned businesses and creatives: Actively support Black-owned businesses in your community by shopping locally, dining at their restaurants, and promoting them through social media. Additionally, engage with Black artists, musicians, and writers by attending events, purchasing their work, and sharing their contributions.

Engage in Community Events: Engage in local events, workshops, and lectures celebrating Black history and culture to learn and connect with the community. Volunteering your time and skills to support organisations can amplify their efforts and promote solidarity within Black communities.

Advocate for Social Change: Engage in efforts to combat racial inequality and advance social justice by joining advocacy groups, participating in campaigns, or supporting policies that dismantle systemic barriers. Your advocacy contributes to a collective movement towards a more equitable society for everyone.
