Inside Public Living Rooms, Where Strangers Become Friends

Words by Abi Scaife

Camerados is a movement where people believe the simple act of being more human by ‘looking out for each other’ can be transformative, especially when people are experiencing tough times. It is based on a simple belief that having ‘people and purpose’ in your life is the most important thing, not only to live a good life, but more critically for when you are going through a tough time.

They host "Public Living Rooms" – a no-agenda space, where people can go to just be themselves alongside others, they are warm welcoming places that offer no services just the company of fellow humans.

Public Living Rooms are not manned by staff, they are set up and organised by people in communities for those communities and are open to all. We speak to Tony McKenzie, a public living room host, who tells us about their importance and how it makes a difference.
