What is International Day of Non-Violence?

Why is it celebrated on the 2nd of October?

What can I do to promote non-violence?

If any of these questions come to your mind, then you’re in the right place. International Day of Non-Violence is a special day established by the United Nations in 2007 to highlight the importance of non-violence when approaching resolution to conflict, social change and future-forward thinking.

Why the 2nd of October?

This day honours the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, who championed the philosophy of non-violence as a powerful tool for social and political transformation.

Mahatma Gandhi's commitment to non-violence was rooted in his belief that peaceful resistance could effectively challenge oppression and injustice. His leadership during the Indian independence movement inspired countless individuals and movements worldwide.

How Do We Accomplish Non-violence?

  1. Promote Non-Violence: Sharing the key principles of this awareness day encourages individuals and communities to adopt peaceful methods in addressing conflicts and grievances.
  2. Encouraging Dialogue: Equal and unbiased conversation should be the basis of all conflict resolution by fostering cooperation, and building harmonious relationships among diverse groups.
  3. Highlighting Human Rights: The observance serves as a platform to advocate for human rights and social justice, reminding people that non-violent action can be a powerful means to address inequalities and injustices.
