Ocean-bound plastic Barbie signals change

Words by Smiley Team

Barbie’s ‘Inspiring Women’ series just got a brilliant new addition – plus an extra special guest.

The ‘Inspiring Women’ series, released by Barbie creator Mattel, includes incredible women throughout history such as journalist and activist Ida B. Wells, educator and advocate Hellen Keller and, most recently, the conservationist Dr Jane Goodall.

Not only that, but the dolls from the series are certified carbon neutral and made from recycled ocean-bound plastic – signalling the beginning of more green work at Mattel.

Dr Jane Goodall, 88, began her career over 60 years ago when she began research into chimpanzees in East Africa. Since then, she has become a world-renown scientist and primatologist, whose study of chimpanzees has changed the way we see these incredible creatures forever.

"My entire career, I've wanted to help inspire kids to be curious and explore the world around them," said Jane. "I hope to inspire the next generation of eco-leaders to join me in protecting our planet and remind them they can be anything, anywhere – on the field, in the lab, and at the table.”

The doll, which is currently available for pre-order on the Mattel website, comes with a miniature replica of David Greybeard, the first chimpanzee that Jane named, and saw using tools in the wild.

"Kids need more role models like Dr Jane Goodall because imagining they can be anything is just the beginning - seeing it makes all the difference," said Lisa McKnight, the executive vice president and global head of Barbie and Mattel dolls.

Barbie has also partnered with the Jane Goodall Institute to introduce the 2022 Career of the Year Eco-Leadership Team. This team of dolls features four roles working to protect the planet and promote sustainability. It is hoped that these dolls will encourage children to learn more about sustainable careers through play.

The careers included in the set include Chief Sustainability Officer, Conservation Scientist, Renewable Energy Engineer, and Environmental Advocate.
