One of the most important, and highly respected, music award shows happened this weekend, and this year it did not disappoint. Many musical icons took to the stage during the event to share their speeches addressing social and political issues.

Chappell Roan

Upon winning Best New Artist, Chappell Roan advocated for better treatment of emerging artists, urging record labels to offer fair wages and healthcare. She shared her personal experience of being signed at a young age and later dropped without support, emphasising the industry's need to value artists as employees.

Lady Gaga

Accepting the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award for "Die With a Smile," Gaga highlighted the importance of supporting trans and queer communities, stating, "Trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up."

Doechii

Doechii made history by winning Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal, becoming only the third woman to earn the honour since 1989. In her emotional acceptance speech, she stressed the power of authenticity and vulnerability in music, saying, "Art and authenticity wins, vulnerability wins." She also encouraged young Black women to chase their dreams, urging, "You can do it. Anything is possible," inspiring many to break free from societal stereotypes.

Alicia Keys

Honoured with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Keys delivered a powerful message on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), asserting, "DEI is not a threat, it's a gift." She emphasised the value of diverse voices in the music industry and the strength they bring.

Shakira

Winning Best Latin Pop Album for Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, Shakira dedicated her award to immigrants, saying, "I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight with you."
