Lego donates a toy for every star built and shared

Words by Smiley Team

To help brighten the Christmas holidays for disadvantaged children, Lego is asking people - young and old - to get creative with their Lego bricks and build a star.

It doesn’t matter how symmetrical or perfectly star-like it is. What does matter, however, is that if you post a photo of it on social media with the hashtag #BuildToGive, the company will donate a Lego set to a child in need.

“For generations and across cultures, people far apart have felt connected to one another while looking at the same starry sky. That’s why we’ve put them at the heart of our #BuildToGive initiative this year – to connect families around the world through play at this time of togetherness and celebration,” said their vice president of social responsibility, Kathrine Kirk Muff.

Their Rebuild the World campaign runs till the end of December. Until then the Lego Group will donate their sets to children in hospitals, children’s homes, and vulnerable communities, for whom play is a more important distraction than ever.

Last Christmas, they donated more than one million sets to children in need. In 2021 they hope to hand out even more toys, with a target of 1.5 million sets sent to children around the world.

“Over the last four years, thanks to fans and families around the world, we have donated millions of Lego sets to children in need of play,” added Kathrine.

“This year will be our biggest to date, as we aim to share the gift of Lego play with 1.5 million children and hope that everyone from little builders to expert ones has some festive fun building stars while taking pride in the fact they are helping to make a difference.”
