Local stories and successes towards achieving carbon zero shared by new charity

Words by Smiley Team

The goal of a carbon zero future is central to many organisations. But how do you actually go about achieving it?

Carbon Copy is a new charity who aim to bring together community groups, councils and companies to share their ideas, plans, projects and initiatives on reaching carbon zero all in one place.

An organisation can write a blog post or share a project on Carbon Copy’s website and tag it with a particular challenge to solve or action area. Challenges to solve include air pollution, food supply and greater fairness while action areas include energy, buildings, transport and nature.

Other users on the site can then be inspired by different projects with the same goals around the country, and share their own successes and stories.

Carbon Copy also host Carbon Zero Explorer, an interactive map which allows users to explore different local areas across the country and discover more about councils’ Climate Action Plans, and the current level and sources of carbon emissions district by district.

Andy Knott is a founding trustee of Carbon Copy, which launched in May 2020. He said: “The vision of Carbon Copy is to celebrate and accelerate local climate action.

“The core of Carbon Copy’s offering is online - a platform where anyone can discover, share and adapt low-carbon initiatives that are working in local communities.

“Our user population continues to grow steadily and we have received many encouraging comments from our users and event participants, who themselves have been inspired by what others are doing.”

The first initiative to post their project on the site was Maidenergy, a non-profit society based in Berkshire who encourage people to switch to renewable energy.

Director Nicola Davidson said: "We all want this movement to grow so we are keen to share anything we have learned with others.

"Ordinary people can get involved in the cooperative movement, you haven't got to be an expert, you've just got to be a team."
