New York becomes transgender safe haven

Words by Tess Becker

Authorities around the United States are navigating trans issues differently, whether that be limiting rights or standing up for trans people.

In a win for trans rights, New York has recently become a safe haven state for trans people. The governor of New York has signed a whole host of legislation to protect the state’s LGBTQ+ community, with explicit safeguarding measures for trans youth.

Ahead of New York City’s Pride parade, Governor Kathy Hochul signed five bills into law that promote gender-neutral language and include safeguards for trans youth.

“We’re making it clear: No matter who you are or who you love, you are valued & respected in New York State,” Governor Hochul said in a tweet

With laws such as this, New York is setting the standard for the types of laws that are possible to protect the LGBTQ+ community.

“We will always be that beacon to the rest of the nation on how to do it right,” Governor Hochul said.
