World's first wine in a paper bottle

Words by Smiley Team

Forget glass bottles or boxes, you can now get wine in a recycled paper bottle.

Available from Woodwinters, the red wine – called 3Q – is contained within what's called 'the Frugal Bottle', which is made from 94% recycled paperboard. The bottle has a carbon footprint up to six times lower than a glass bottle.

It weighs just 83g before it’s filled and is almost five times lighter than a normal glass bottle, making it easier to carry and lighter to transport, further helping to reduce its carbon footprint.

The water footprint of the bottle is at least four times lower than a glass bottle, too. And it’s also easy to recycle again – you simply have to separate the plastic food-grade pouch from the paper bottle and put them in your respective recycling bins.

The pouch inside of the paper bottle is a polyethylene metallised polyester laminate – the same material used in box wines – and it’s attached to a plastic spout with an aluminium top. The pouch is not made from recycled plastic yet, but the brand says it's “constantly striving” to make the Frugal Bottle even more sustainable.

Since launching in July 2020, the Cantina Goccia 3Q Frugal Bottle has twice sold-out, with one wine chain – Woodwinters in Scotland – selling its whole stock in one day. It convinced Cantina Goccia to move 80% of their wine production into the paper bottle and release two new wines in the Frugal Bottle in 2022 – a white wine Celi and a rose called Rosa.

Cantina Goccia strives to reduce its environmental footprint in other ways, too: from organic farming practices, and significantly reduced tilling of the land, to applying energy-saving initiatives such as the installation of solar PV panels and heat pumps to produce its wines as sustainably as possible.

Cantina Goccia owner, Ceri Parke, said: “More and more people are looking to have a Greener Christmas, especially when it comes to packaging. So we are delighted that our award-winning 3Q is available in the Frugal Bottle as a present for a loved one or a valuable addition to your Christmas dinner table.

“It’s a considerably more sustainable form of packaging for an industry and consumers crying out for greener innovation. We believe the Frugal Bottle has the potential to decarbonise the drinks industry and we’re pleased that we’re leading the way.”
