Tucked in that wholesome corner of the internet dedicated to sustainability, Peace with the Wild ships hundreds of eco-friendly products to around the UK. From toothbrushes to gardening equipment, it offers green alternatives to most everyday essentials.

Operating from their shop in North Lincolnshire, the business is owned and run by a very eco-conscious family. Madison Palmer runs their social media, her brother Jordan is the web developer working on their digital store, and their entrepreneurial mother, Rachel, organises the business side of things.

“We all care so much about the planet,” says Madison. “From the products we stock, to how we ship them to customers, each small detail is planet friendly and that's at the heart of everything we do including seeing how sustainable the brands we stock are.”

Eco-conscious commerce

Each of the items they sell is carefully selected and examined by Rachel to ensure its environmental impact is as minimal as possible. She searches for brands that label themselves as “sustainable” and orders product samples to check how genuine they are. If they use plastic, are not recyclable, biodegradable or eco-friendly in enough ways, those brands won’t make it to their shelves.

“It's surprising to me to see some companies stocking brands that we know are not plastic free,” explains Madison. “For example, for reusable lunch boxes, we found a company which packaged each one in plastic.

“They claimed they cannot send them without this non-recyclable material. But we cannot stock them, obviously. I do, however, see other eco stores stocking them, even though they’re not very eco-friendly at all - so it’s interesting to see how different our values are.”

A learning process

To heighten their understanding of what they’re selling, the family all educate themselves continuously to keep updated on the latest research.

“Reading, listening and learning about the climate crisis is something I'm not only incredibly passionate about but also a huge advocate for promoting sustainable ways to live. This is the driving force behind our new refill store - changing people's shopping habits,” Madison adds.

On peacewiththewild.co.uk, shoppers can discover all kinds of eco friendly alternatives they might never have imagined would exist. There’s compostable bin bags, vegan wax alternatives to clingfilm, natural and reusable cleaning products, as well as all manner of plastic-free tupperware.

Additionally, the Palmers plant trees every few months from their profits. So far they have planted over 1,766 saplings and offset their carbon emissions by 795.6 tonnes of CO2.
