In the centre of Davos, at the heart of the World Economic Forum, there is a man with a home-shaped hole in his chest.
Created by Veronica de Nogales in partnership with charity Homeless Entrepreneur, The UnforeSeen Variable is a sculpture representing the plight of people experiencing homelessness.
“It is an honour for me to speak a few words to the today's introduction of this impressive statue,” says Ladina Alioth, President of the Davos District Council as the sculpture is unveiled. “This is an important topic, not only globally, but also here in our rich Switzerland and even here in Davos.”
The sculpture features a man holding a book, with bare feet and hands, and a hole in his chest in the shape of a house.
The UnforeSeen Variable sits on the heart of the Promenade in Davos Platz, staring into the eyes of any who walk past, helping to raise awareness of what needs to be done to help those experiencing homelessness.
“It is extremely important that people advocate for these forgotten and often invisible individuals,” continues Ladina. “A heartful thanks to Veronica, the artist, and Andrew from the homeless entrepreneur organization, for making this topic visible here and today and giving a face to all these people.”
The sculpture will continue to sit outside in Davos for the remainder of the World Economic Forum - and, if they are able to find a sponsor, for much longer. Every day that the UnforeSeen Variable sits in Davos is another day that people might be inspired to create change, and help even one person.
