Rakeem Miles, an artist known for his impactful creative projects, is deeply committed to giving back to the youth. His journey from a troubled childhood to a successful career has inspired him to become a guiding light for young people facing similar struggles.

Today, he shares his story and insight into the importance of supporting youth through art, music, and mentorship.

When reflecting on his younger self, Rakeem recalls the immense challenges he faced.

“School was very hard for me; I was expelled from 14 schools and was also in foster care as a child,” he admits. But through it all, his grandmother stood by him, offering guidance and support.

“My grandmother helped me every step of the way and guided me through both situations.” Her influence would prove pivotal in shaping the man Rakeem is today, someone who is now determined to help others overcome the hardships he once faced.

These early experiences have driven Rakeem’s passion for giving back, particularly to young people.

He adds: “Going through what I experienced as a child and the feelings of being lost and abandoned made me understand the challenges these kids face. I genuinely want to help them, and since I went through it myself, I can provide advice on coping strategies and share my story.”

Rakeem's commitment to uplifting youth goes beyond just words; he actively participates in creative projects that harness the power of music and art to help young people express themselves. He has seen firsthand how these mediums can provide an essential outlet for emotions, particularly for those who have experienced trauma.

“Music and art are powerful forms of expression,” he explains. “Kids who have experienced traumatic events often use these mediums to express their emotions, providing a vital outlet for their feelings.”

The importance of public figures, like Rakeem, supporting charitable causes is not lost on him.

“It's crucial for young people to see others who are in positions they aspire to support them,” he states. “This demonstrates how far they can go and serves as an inspiration. When they see someone with a similar background succeed and give back, it makes a significant impact.”

Rakeem’s words highlight the importance of representation and the positive ripple effect it creates when someone who shares similar experiences rises to success and then reaches back to pull others up.

One of the initiatives Rakeem is most passionate about is his work with Spy Hop, a digital media arts centre that empowers young people through creative programmes. Spy Hop offers after-school programmes, in-school initiatives, summer camps, and youth-in-care programmes for students aged 9-19.

They cater to all skill levels and aspirations in film, music, audio, and design, which makes it a place where young people can thrive.

It’s clear that this nonprofit is close to Rakeem as he sees the value in providing young people with the tools to explore their creative potential, giving them a safe space to dream and grow.

However, it is not just the success stories that keep Rakeem motivated. He has witnessed the harsh realities that many young people face, particularly those from backgrounds like his own.

“Seeing young people of my background fall victim to gun violence and drug-related issues has been heartbreaking,” he admits. “Teachers at my old alternative school would share the struggles these kids face, compelling me to help. I also witnessed classmates die from these issues post-graduation, which greatly impacted me.”

Rakeem’s advice for others looking to support charities or initiatives that focus on youth is simple but powerful:

“People should gauge the interests of the youth they are trying to support. Engaging them with relatable activities is essential, as being too preachy might make it difficult to connect,” he says. “Approaching them with initiatives that resonate with their interests is key.”

On this International Youth Day, Rakeem’s message to young people everywhere is one of hope and perseverance.

“Never give up on your dreams, nothing is too far-fetched,” he encourages. “Don’t let naysayers dim your light; what is meant for you is meant for you, and no one can take that away. Always follow your own path and believe in yourself, and others will believe in you as well.”
