Robots transform epilepsy treatments

Words by Abi Scaife

Treatment for epilepsy is being transformed by tiny robots.

Wait, what?

A little sci-fi, we know, but hear us out. Epilepsy treatments have come a long way in the last few decades, but a condition as complicated as this doesn’t have a ‘one size fits all’ treatment.

That’s why it’s so brilliant these new treatments are being developed - and some of them are pretty futuristic sounding.

A brand new technique involves inserting electrodes into the brain, in order to find the primary source of the seizures.

After that, a laser can be used to remove that part of the brain and, from there, previously uncontrollable seizures can be managed with medication.

What makes it even more incredible, is this laser is controlled by a robot - almost like a GPS of the human brain.

It’s incredible advances in science and technology like these that are giving brand new independence to people who suffer from epilepsy.
