Safety, Silk, and Sustainability: The INO Armor Story

Words by Cheyanne Bryan, Editorial and Campaign Marketing Executive, London

Charlie Maddock, co-founder and CEO of INO Armor, turned a personal tragedy into a pioneering journey of innovation.

In 2004, Charlie was struck by a taxi in Manhattan, leaving him with severe brain injuries. His recovery was long and grueling, but it was during this time that he formed a close bond with his neurosurgeon, Dr. Howard Riina.

This relationship became the foundation for INO Armor, which originated in a non profit  aimed at supporting victims of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries which Charlie started with Dr. Riina.

In an interview with Smiley News, Charlie explains: “After my accident, I realised just how fragile the brain is. I wanted to do something that could help others avoid the same kind of trauma and make a real difference.”

What began as a desire to assist those affected by brain injuries soon evolved into a company with innovation at the core, focused on creating high-performance safety products, starting with bicycle helmets

But Charlie’s personal experience with a brain injury would drive him to push for a solution that didn’t just focus on safety but also sustainability.

Silk Innovation

Silk Cocoon

As mentioned previously, the breakthrough that launched INO Armor into the spotlight was the development of a bicycle helmet made using natural silk cocoons. The material, which replaces the traditional EPS foam, offers superior impact protection while being biodegradable.

Partnering with material scientist Professor Fritz Vollrath, Charlie and his team created a helmet that outperformed traditional foam helmets in impact tests.

“The idea of using silk came from nature,” Charlie shares. “Silk is incredibly strong, yet lightweight, and it’s been used in nature for centuries to protect delicate things like insects. Why couldn’t we use it to protect people?”

The result was a helmet that not only provides excellent safety but also aligns with INO Armor’s commitment to sustainability.

Charlie’s vision was clear: “We wanted to prove that you can have performance and sustainability together. Silk delivers on both fronts.”

From Helmets to Sustainable Packaging

Helmets were only the beginning and with the market becoming increasingly interested in sustainable and durable alternatives to plastic-based materials, INO Armor didn’t stop there. The company expanded into the packaging world, offering silk pillows as a biodegradable alternative to toxic plastics and foams traditionally used to protect fragile items like bottles of wine and spirits.

These eco-friendly packaging solutions soon caught the attention of big names in the spirits industry. Pantalones Tequila and Teremana Tequila adopted INO Armor’s silk pillows for their packaging, adding a new dimension to their sustainability efforts.

INO Armor X Pantalones

Charlie says: “When we saw the silk pillows in action, we knew we had something that could revolutionise the packaging industry.

“We’re not just changing how we protect products; we’re changing how we think about sustainability in luxury goods.”

The partnership with Teremana Tequila took things a step further. On Earth Day, INO Armor and Teremana launched sustainable travel packaging, making a bold statement about the potential for eco-friendly packaging solutions to make a tangible environmental impact.

Protecting What Matters Most

For Charlie, the marriage of performance and sustainability is not just a business model but a core belief.

“Sustainability can’t be a buzzword. It has to be part of what you do, every day,” he insists. The team at INO Armor is committed to proving that eco-friendly products can outperform traditional ones, without compromising on quality.

As INO Armor prepares for future global rollouts, Charlie’s optimism remains unwavering. “The demand for eco-friendly solutions is growing, and we’re excited to be part of that movement,” he says.

Charlie’s journey – from a life-altering accident to a mission-driven company – is a testament to the power of resilience, innovation, and a commitment to making the world a safer and greener place.
