6 charities leading Scotland’s eco-friendly drive

World leaders will gather in Scotland this November to decide how best to tackle climate change at the UN’s Climate Change Conference. As the summit’s host, Scotland is ahead of much of the world when it comes to energy use, travel and air quality. This makes it one of the most environmentally friendly countries in the developed world.

So who is behind its success? Playing a large role in the national sustainability drive, charities have been at the forefront of positive change in a huge range of areas. Here are some of the organisations attending the climate summit this year who are partly to thank for Scotland’s environmental achievements. 

Marine Alliance for Science and Technology Scotland (MAST)

Bringing together marine research organisations, government and industry, MAST aims to improve environmental conditions in our oceans, build climate resilience and create more green jobs in coastal areas.

Nourish Scotland hopes to transform the country’s food system so that it works in favour of the environment and communities. This means working with food producers such as farmers, as well as consumers, to create a healthier and more sustainable way for Scottish people to eat.

Encompassing a wide array of environmental groups, Stop Climate Chaos Scotland hopes to unite ordinary people to drive action around climate change. They work with the government to propel Scottish society towards more eco-friendly systems in areas such as housing, transport, energy and education.

Focused on transport, Transform Scotland brings together public, private and voluntary organisations to lower the carbon footprint of public transport. To reach this goal they organise actions, run campaigns, and engage with the major players running Scotland’s transport networks.

Creative Carbon Scotland

Creative Carbon Scotland is a charity that harnesses the power of the arts in order to spread important messages about climate change. By 2026 it hopes to have aligned the cultural sector with environmental needs through shared resources, training and networks.

A Christian charity with the environment at its heart, Eco Congregation Scotland runs a large range of initiatives to make Scotland more sustainable. This includes events to tackle climate change, a map of projects to support, community orchards and more.
