Let’s be real - doomscrolling is exhausting. That’s why Smiley News has teamed up with The Big Issue to flip the script. Every Thursday, we’re bringing you stories that actually make you feel something good — proof that people are out there making a real difference. It's solutions-focused journalism that hits you in the feels (in the best way).
Here’s what’s dropped so far:
Chris and Valerie from Swansea could’ve just rented out their two four-bed homes, but instead? They donated them to homelessness charity The Wallich. Now, those houses are helping people off the streets and into safe spaces through the ABBA (Alternative to Bed and Breakfast Accommodation) programme. Proof that being kind can also be powerful.
Imagine not having access to a shower for days. Sarah Lamptey did, and launched ShowerBox — a solar-powered, mobile shower service for people experiencing homelessness in London. With help from tech company Navitron, she’s bringing dignity and self-care back to those who need it most.
These aren’t just feel-good stories - they’re reminders that we can build a better world, one good idea (and one great person) at a time.
