Welcome to The Good Guide, your monthly roundup of positive events, volunteering opportunities, and community initiatives happening across the UK.

March brings longer days, a sense of fresh energy, and plenty of ways to get involved in causes that make a real difference. From celebrating women’s achievements to switching off for the planet, here are a few feel-good moments happening this month.

World Book Day

📅 6 March | Nationwide

Books have shaped the world we live in - sparking movements, sharing knowledge and changing how we see one another.

Every year World Book Day encourages people of all ages to rediscover the joy of reading. Across the UK, schools and libraries celebrate with storytelling sessions, book swaps and creative activities that inspire a new generation of readers.

It’s also a great reminder to donate a book, support a literacy charity, or simply pick up something new to read.

International Women’s Day

📅 8 March | Nationwide

International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women while continuing the push for gender equality.

Across the UK, organisations, charities and community groups host panels, talks, fundraisers and networking events that highlight female leaders, innovators and changemakers.

It’s a moment to recognise the progress that’s been made and continue supporting the women who are shaping the future.

St Patrick’s Day Festival – London

📅 17 March | London

London turns green for the St Patrick’s Day Festival, one of the city’s biggest cultural celebrations.

The festival brings together Irish music, dance, food and culture, with parades, live performances and celebrations in Trafalgar Square and across the city.

It’s a fantastic example of how cultural events can bring communities together and celebrate diversity across the UK.

Red Nose Day & International Day of Happiness

📅 20 March | Nationwide

The 20th of March brings two powerful reminders of the importance of kindness and community.

Red Nose Day, organised by Comic Relief, sees schools, workplaces and communities across the UK hosting fundraisers, bake sales and challenges to help tackle poverty and inequality.

The same day also marks the International Day of Happiness, encouraging people to spread positivity through simple acts of kindness - from volunteering and supporting charities to helping neighbours or checking in on friends.

Together, these moments highlight the power of collective action and compassion.

World Water Day

📅 22 March | Worldwide

World Water Day raises awareness about the importance of clean water and the need to protect one of our planet’s most vital resources.

The day highlights global efforts to improve access to safe drinking water and encourages communities to think about how we can protect and conserve water for future generations.

Earth Hour

📅 28 March | 8:30–9:30pm | Worldwide

Millions of people around the world take part in Earth Hour, switching off their lights for one hour in a powerful show of solidarity for the planet.

From homes and businesses to landmarks and city skylines, people across the globe join together to highlight the importance of protecting our environment and tackling climate change.

It’s a small action that sends a powerful message about caring for our planet.
