The Slow Fashion Brand Turning Curtains Into Clothes

Words by Cheyanne Bryan

Back in June Smiley News went to Roskilde Festival, a nonprofit festival that pushes charity and sustainability.

Whilst there, we ran into Pleasant, a conscious clothing brand with ambitious goals and a commitment to sustainability.

To combat clothing waste, Pleasant avoids using new materials and insteads ops to create clothing from repurposed textiles, including curtains, bed linens, and tablecloths, with some materials sourced from The Red Cross. Since 2021, Pleasant has not purchased any new textiles.

The clothing industry faces significant environmental challenges; many apparel  production processes not only consume vast amounts of agricultural land, water, and chemicals but also generate the highest CO2 emissions associated with clothing.

But Pleasant doesn't stop there, they prioritise slow, low-emission transportation methods. When shipping textiles from Denmark and returning finished products, they utilise ships, trains, or trucks, as air transport produces over 70 times more CO2 than container shipping. Their commitment is to avoid air transport entirely in their production process.

Additionally, if you have Pleasant clothing that you no longer use, you can return it and receive up to 50% off your next purchase. Pleasant then resells these pre-owned items, giving them a second life. This initiative aims to circulate clothing among multiple owners, maximising their usage and reducing waste.
