The top 25 countries that rank best for social progress

Words by Abi Scaife

The best countries for social progress in 2022 have been announced.

Great! Who came first?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, in first place was Norway - as has been the case in the last two years of the Social Progress Index. Coming second and third were Denmark and Finland, respectively.

So why do we measure social progress?

The index looks at several different categories, of 12 components and 60 indicators to measure progress. They are able to fully measure the progress of 169 countries, and partially measure that of 27 other countries.

This is to help us understand how people are living, who is being left behind, and how to accelerate progress.

How do they define progress?

Progress is all about improving the country for the sake of its people and environment - the categories that are measured include things like personal safety, access to basic knowledge, personal rights, and even things like environmental quality.
