When it comes to real climate action, some cities are miles ahead of the game. According to the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) - which ranks destinations on everything from renewable energy to inclusion and innovation - these three are leading the charge.
Copenhagen made cycling cool long before it became a climate trend. With over 400 kilometres of bike lanes, it’s a city where bikes outnumber cars, and even the harbour is clean enough to swim in. Add rooftop gardens, solar-powered buildings, and clever energy systems that recycle waste heat - and you’ve got a city that proves sustainability can look stylish.
A green powerhouse that’s been near the top of the GDS Index for seven years straight. Nearly 88% of its hotels are eco-certified, public transport runs on renewable energy, and social inclusion is baked into every decision. Gothenburg shows that a truly sustainable city looks after both people and the planet.
Taking the top spot is Helsinki, a city redefining what sustainable living means. From carbon-neutral goals by 2030 to smart waste systems that turn rubbish into energy, this Nordic capital is combining innovation with everyday action. Even its residents are part of the plan - with apps that track personal emissions and help locals live greener. Helsinki proves that when a city and its citizens work together, sustainability becomes a shared way of life.
Together, these cities are showing the world that sustainability isn’t just about saving the planet - it’s about designing better ways to live.
