Travel Redefined: A New Era of Sustainable Tourism

As we celebrate World Tourism Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the future of travel. With the tourism industry recovering from the impact of the pandemic, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reshaping the way we travel. 

In collaboration with Content With Purpose (CWP), the digital series Travel Redefined: Tourism for People and Planet brings together stories and insights from across the globe, spotlighting sustainable tourism practices that benefit both people and the planet.

The importance of sustainable tourism cannot be overstated. According to the UN’s World Tourism Barometer, global tourism saw a 5% rise in international arrivals in Q1 of 2025, marking a swift recovery. 

However, this growth brings with it the pressing need to reconsider the industry's impact. From climate change to biodiversity loss and overtourism, the challenges are significant. But Travel Redefined provides a compelling vision for the future—a future where tourism contributes positively to environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and social equity.

Filmed across six continents, the series showcases 24 short films, expert interviews, and thought-leadership pieces. The diverse content highlights innovative solutions, such as how mangroves and tourism are helping to restore The Bahamas, or the role of community tourism in protecting the Amazon and preserving indigenous cultures. The series also explores how digital detox and responsible travel can shape the future of tourism.

Max Smith, Founder of CWP, emphasises the core message of the series: "A flourishing, sustainable industry isn’t a distant vision. It’s happening right now, and we all have a role to play." 

With local film crews used to minimise travel emissions, every step of the project has been designed with sustainability in mind, reinforcing the very values the series promotes.

This initiative is not just for the industry. It’s for everyone - policymakers, industry leaders, and travellers alike. 

Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC, sums it up perfectly: "Every journey holds the potential to leave a positive legacy."
