Valentine's cards now available in braille

Words by Smiley Team

Valentine's Day has got a lot more inclusive, as Tesco announced it has become the first UK major retailer to sell a range of braille Valentine's Day cards.

There are more than two million people living with sight loss in the UK, so it's a move that has been welcomed by many across the country.

The cards, which are created by Hallmark, were produced in collaboration with Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), and have varied sensory features including different feel, texture and pattern work in addition to the braille.

Whether the card giver, receiver or both have visual impairments, the range provides an affordable and accessible option for Valentine’s Day.

Stephanie Burrows Assistant Buyer for cards says: “At Tesco, our customers are at the heart of everything we do, so it’s important we make a continued effort to build an inclusive and accessible product range to meet their needs.

“We’re always listening to feedback and know cards are an area where more diversity and inclusiveness is desperately needed for better representation of us all. We’ve recently been adding more LGBTQIA+, disability and ethnicity cards across many of our card ranges, and we’re delighted to share them with our customers and look forward to hearing their feedback.”

Tesco was the first Supermarket to launch braille cards in June 2021 as part of the Everyday range.
