While many people seem to be in their running era, it’s good to keep in mind that cycling also has great benefits socially, personally and environmentally.

For the wheely good awareness day of World Bicycle Day, we have compiled a go-to list to finally convince you to get on that bike and peddle to your heart’s content.

A Good Choice for Beginner Exercise

If you want to incorporate a bit of exercise into your life, cycling may be the perfect place to start, the ideal low-impact workout. It’s gentle on the joints, suitable for most fitness levels, and you don’t need a gym membership to get started. With more affordable bikes and second-hand options available than ever, it’s one of the most accessible ways to get active.

Our Cities Are Getting More Bike-Friendly

Thanks to a growing interest in sustainable transport, UK cities have been stepping up their infrastructure. From expanded cycle lanes to bike hire schemes and more street guidance, urban areas are becoming safer and more welcoming for cyclists. These changes not only help commuters but also reduce pollution and congestion for everyone.

Ride to Work – the Ultimate Two-for-One

Want to save on petrol and squeeze in your daily workout? Cycling to work ticks both boxes. It’s faster than walking, cheaper than public transport in the long run, and you’ll arrive energised (and possibly a bit smug). Many employers even support the Cycle to Work scheme, making it easier to invest in a new set of wheels.

Join the Club

Just like how running clubs are on the rise, there are many  You're in good company. According to recent data, millions more people in the UK have taken up cycling in recent years. Find out how many here. It’s no longer just for weekend warriors or Lycra-clad speedsters – cycling is for everyone.

Static Bike Appreciation

Not in the mood to brave the outdoors? Great, because I am neither. Exercise doesn’t have to be synonymous with leaving the house, and exercise bikes are an excellent option for getting fit without leaving the house. Set one up in front of your desk for a work-from-home workout or park it in front of the TV for an easy way to stay active during your favourite show. It’s a perfect way to sneak in some cardio while catching up on emails or enjoying Netflix.
