5 Cool New Ways to Get Around – That Are Good for the Planet

06:30, 26 November 2024

Words by Cheyanne Bryan, Editorial and Campaign Marketing Executive, London

Despite Back to the Future’s predictions, teleportation and flying are not yet on the cards as a transportation method. Yet, there are some methods for you to get around while putting the planet first.

With climate consciousness being a top priority for many people, there has been an emphasis in all industries for a sustainable alternative and that includes transportation.

All aboard the mobility revolution

So for World Sustainable Travel Day, we have collated 5 transportation methods for you to consider:

1.  Electric Air Taxis (eVTOLs) – Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft designed for urban air mobility, offering quick, emissions-free travel across cities, reducing traffic congestion, and offering greener alternatives to traditional air travel - which is one of the biggest polluters.

2.  Hydrogen-Powered Trains – Hydrogen-powered buses were introduced to London’s iconic red fleet in June 2021 and now that upgrade is coming for trains. Vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells produce zero emissions and are being tested and implemented in countries like Germany, providing a sustainable alternative to diesel-powered trains for rural and non-electrified railway lines.

Watch to see how they are using this technology in Spain here

3.  Solar-Powered Boats – Solar-powered vessels that use solar panels to charge batteries and operate without fossil fuels. These boats are increasingly being used for sustainable tourism and transport in regions with abundant sunlight. This method would especially work well in tropical regions with a lot of sunlight and bustling sea communities.

4.  Electric Scooters and E-Bikes – Seen around many cities and big towns, electric scooters and bikes provide an energy-efficient (and affordable) way to travel short distances, helping reduce traffic congestion and lower urban carbon footprints.

5.  Maglev Trains – Magnetic levitation (maglev) trains, which float above the tracks using magnetic forces, are faster and more energy-efficient than traditional trains, offering a sustainable alternative for high-speed, long-distance travel with minimal environmental impact.

China has already started trailing their new innovative trains
