4 Important Signs to Spot a Tsunami

20 years ago, a devastating earthquake and tsunami swept through Thailand, measuring in with  a magnitude of 9.2 – 9.3. Known as one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern history, there is an inspirational story that stands out.

On holiday with her family, then 10-year-old Tilly Smith made a remarkable and life-saving observation just minutes before the devastating tsunami struck in 2004. While enjoying a day at the beach, Tilly recognised the signs of an impending tsunami—knowledge she had learned about in her geography class only two weeks prior.

Her quick thinking and timely warning to her parents not only alerted them but ultimately contributed to the evacuation of hundreds of tourists, highlighting the profound impact that education can have in critical moments. Tilly's actions serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of awareness and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.

Here are some life saving early signs of an impending tsunami:

1. Earthquake

A strong earthquake, especially one that lasts more than 20 seconds, can trigger a tsunami. If you are in a coastal area and feel a significant quake, it’s important to move to higher ground immediately.

2. Unusual Ocean Behaviour

Look for sudden changes in the ocean. This can include a drawback - this refers to a rapid retreat of the waterline, exposing the ocean floor and marine life, and unusual  waves that may appear as a series of large, powerful waves or a sudden rise in water levels.

3. Loud Roaring Sound

A tsunami can produce a loud, rumbling noise, similar to that of a freight train or jet engine. This sound may precede the arrival of the waves.

4. Rapidly Rising Water

If you notice the water level rising quickly and significantly, it may indicate that a tsunami is approaching.
