World's first 'dementia village' is a safe community

Words by Abi Scaife

The Netherlands has launched the world’s first ‘dementia village’.

Tell me more!

The Hogeweyk is a community in The Netherlands that, since 2009, has been caring for those with dementia.

The Hogeweyk is unlike other care facilities, in that it is far more of a community than it is an institution. Designed to look like any other neighbourhood with hairdressers, cinemas, shops and restaurants, all the necessary healthcare professionals simply … blend in!

Amazing.

All those who work in the businesses are trained in dementia care and, with doctors and therapists and nurses blending into the community, patients are able to have a full, low-stress life while getting the care they need.

Plus, each patient has their own private room, all the while prioritising socialisation and community, encouraging patients to make friends, and get involved in their community.
